Director’s Discovery Fund
Gifts to the Director’s Discovery Fund help support two types of awards: Pilot Awards, providing up to $50,000 for one year for highly innovative, cancer-relevant research, and Team Science Awards, providing research teams up to $100,000 per year for up to two years to enhance efforts to generate data for the development of large, multi-project grant applications.
Innovation Impact Fund
Gifts to the Innovation Impact Fund help increase the speed at which research discoveries move from the lab into practice and patient care, with the goal of maximizing wide-scale impact and benefit for patients. Donations support the development of ideas in the preliminary stage of project conception when it is difficult to get federal funding.
Stanley M. Marks, MD Endowed Research Fund
Gifts to the Stanley M. Marks, MD Endowed Research Fund provide seed money for young investigators as they build their translational research programs, provide funding for senior researchers to conduct highly innovative or specialized translational projects, recruit young new leaders, and acquire and maintain new research equipment for laboratories and unrestricted research to launch unique programs.
Cancer Unrestricted Development Fund
Gifts to the Cancer Unrestricted Development Fund give UPMC Hillman Cancer Center flexibility because these gifts can be deployed in the areas of most promise or most need. Make a difference today and save on taxes when you support UPMC Hillman Cancer Center through your IRA.
Beginning at age 70 ½, you can give any amount (up to a maximum of $105,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as UPMC Hillman Cancer Center without paying income taxes. Gifts of $105,000 or less are eligible for this benefit. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.
Beginning in the year you turn 73, you could use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD). You could pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
No matter your age, you could designate UPMC Hillman Cancer Center as the beneficiary of all or a percentage of your IRA, and it will pass to us tax-free after your lifetime. It’s simple, just requiring that you contact your IRA administrator for a change-of-beneficiary form or download a form from your provider’s website.
When considering charitable giving, you should talk with your tax, legal, and financial advisors; the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC do not render these services.
Corporate matching gifts count toward your contribution to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and may significantly increase the value of your total gift.
Through planned or deferred gifts, you can offer a more substantial legacy than might be possible by making cash donations throughout your lifetime. Your deferred gift strengthens our research and clinical programs/services at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Planned gifts may be made through bequests, life insurance, qualified retirement plans, or real estate. To learn more about Planned Giving, click here.
